Elon Musk came out as autistic last night on national television. And it means nothing at all. Not while the vast majority of people on the spectrum are poor, miseducated, mistreated, and abused. It means nothing “representation” either. What in God’s name could an autistic person find relatable about Musk? He is so far beyond us in terms of social standing that any ability to do so is patently ridiculous, at least should one possess even a crumb of self-respect.
Nor does Musk’s announcement do anything for the public perception of autism. Even if it followed that some people were watching SNL that night who learned of this and seriously questioned their interchangeable use of “autistic” with “retarded” (a gross thing if there ever was one) it would be nothing but the change of one stereotype to another. Musk would, and probably is at this point, be seen as the hyper-intelligent savant, which itself is fetishized by allistics at large. He’d have made people think less about Radio and more about Sheldon Cooper.
Musk is an exploiter and should be continued to be viewed as one. His Twitter shenanigans, his disability, his kid’s weird and unpronouncable name, none of these things hide the facts. Musk is worth 12 figures and treats his workers like shit as he exploits their labor. His aforementioned Twitter fuckery has a habit of constantly putting the jobs of Tesla workers at risk. He, like really all white South Africans, champions imperialism on the Third World. Musk may be part of the autistic community, but that does not make him a friend.
